In the time of Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ سَلَّم , and his receiving revelation from Allah, influential Quraysh leaders approached the Prophet with offers that if he would worship their idols for one year, they would worship Allah the next. They even promised wealth, marriage, and leadership if he stopped criticizing their gods.
Firmly, the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ سَلَّم rejected all offers, saying, “I seek refuge in Allah from associating partners with Him.” This uncompromising stance led to the revelation of Surah # 109, Al-Kafirun, which ends with verse 6: “To you be your way, and to me mine.”
The surah Kafirun is a declaration of independence from idol worship and a source of strength for Muslims under pressure in regards their faith. Material gain or social acceptance cannot justify compromising belief. Muslims are taught to remain firm in their worship of Allah while allowing others their own way; “To you be your way, and to me mine.”
The verse emphasizes that Islam cannot compromise its core principle of Tawheed (Oneness of GOD). While rejecting idol worship, the verse also acknowledges religious differences without hostility, each group follows its own path, “To you be your way, and to me mine.”
“If any of them should say “I am a god besides Him” such a one We should reward with Hell: thus, do We reward those who do wrong.” Quran, Surah Al-Anbiya 21, verse 29.
