This verse (19:33) was revealed to declare the innocence, truthfulness, and divine mission of Jesus (‘Isa [عَلَيْهِ السَّلآَمُ ]), and to show that his entire existence—birth, death, and resurrection—are surrounded by the peace, protection, and honor of GOD.
“And peace is on me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I will be raised alive.”
These are the words of Jesus (‘Isa [عَلَيْهِ السَّلآَمُ ]) ; as an infant, speaking miraculously in defense of his mother Mary who had just returned to her people carrying a newborn, they accused her of immorality. Jesus spoke as a baby by command of GOD to clear her name.
Note: see below for full story from Quran text in English: last two paragraphs.
“It is not befitting to (the majesty of) GOD that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! When He determines a matter, He only says to it “Be”, and it is;” Quran 19:35
So, who is Jesus? What is his identity?
In his speech Jesus declared:
• He is a servant of God
• He is a prophet
• He was given a scripture
• He was blessed wherever he would be
• And GOD placed peace upon the key moments of his existence (birth, death, and resurrection).
Peace here means: Protection, the day he was born, created by GOD. Safety, from the trials of death and the grave. And Honor on the Day of Resurrection.
Jesus’ life is under the Protection of GOD. The birth of Jesus, his death, and resurrection are not random events but are in fact divinely guarded to affirm the Humanity of Jesus, and refute any idea that he is divine or exempt from human stages of existence.
To emphasize the mortality of Jesus, although the verse does not directly address him, Quran chapter 7:194-195 reads:
“Verily those whom you call upon besides GOD are servants like unto you: call upon them and let them listen to your prayer if you are (indeed) truthful! Have they feet to walk with? Or hands to lay hold with? Or eyes to see with? Or ears to hear with? Say: “Call your god-partners, scheme (your worst) against me and give me, no respite! “
“At length she brought the (babe) to her people, carrying him (in her arms). they said: “O Mary! truly an amazing thing have you brought! “O sister of Harun (Aaron)! your father was not a man of evil, nor your mother a woman unchaste!” But she pointed to the babe. They said: “How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?” He said: “I am indeed a servant of GOD: He has given me revelation and made me a prophet; “And He has made me Blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live; “(He) has made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable; “So Peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again)”! Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary: (it is) a statement of truth, about which they (vainly) dispute;” Quran 19:27-34.
It is not befitting to (the majesty of) GOD that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! When He determines a matter, He only says to it “Be”, and it is. Verily GOD is my Lord and your Lord: Him therefore serve you: this is a Way that is straight. But the sects differ among themselves: and woe to the Unbelievers because of the (coming) Judgment of a momentous Day! How plainly will they see and hear, the Day that they will appear before Us! but the unjust today are in error manifest!” Quran 19:35-38.
