U.S. issues Level 3 travel warning for Tanzania

The U.S. State Department {on October 31, 2025) issued a Level 3 ‘Reconsider Travel’ advisory for Tanzania. Visitors are urged to weigh safety concerns carefully before planning a trip, as the advisory cites rising crime, unrest, and other potential risks across the region.

Demonstrations are being described by U.S. officials as unpredictable, with the Tanzanian government increasing security via roadblocks and checkpoints.

Violent crime isn’t just a footnote: assaults, carjackings, muggings, and even sexual violence are mentioned in the advisory. Meanwhile, the risk of terrorist activity is particularly high near Tanzania’s southern border with Mozambique, especially in the Mtwara region.

What does “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” actually mean

To navigate this properly, it helps to know what these U.S. advisory levels actually mean. The State Department’s system is fairly straightforward:

Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions

Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Level 4: Do Not Travel

A Level 3 warning doesn’t mean “cancel everything,” but it does mean “think twice and make a solid plan.” The advisory explicitly recommends having an emergency evacuation plan that doesn’t rely solely on the U.S. government. https://www.aol.com/…/u-issues-level-3-travel-191500087… Abigail Bemer | AOL – 11/14/2025
